How to on Bodice

I want to make this bodice http://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/158194?sortBy=Relevance&ft=ball+gown&offset=0&rpp=100&pos=62 and I'm a little fuzzy about how to do the shoulder strap part. I'm not sure if it's as simple as cutting off the bodice front and ba...

More Bodice help please!

Attached are the gown I am copying and my mockup so far. I feel like my side pieces/pleats are not laying right and I can't figure out why. I suppose this could be due to the fact that I am currently using muslin and the finish gown will be in a heavier satin. But I feel like my pleats are making th...

How to for Bodice

Hi all, I was hoping someone might be able to help me figure out how to do the bottom of this bodice https://www.pinterest.com/pin/457678380865624102/ . I can figure out the top just fine but I get lost around the side pleats. It is one of May's gowns from the Age of Innocence which I know is probab...

Re: Opinion Please

I thought of sending them a swatch but the plaid is coming from India and the taffeta from Taiwan and I figured there wouldn't be enough time to send fabric back and forth and still have time to sew. Do you think it would be horrid if the reds weren't an exact match? Also, do you think the back is p...

Re: Sleeves for TV446

Maybe I cut it out to big because the wrist of just the sleeve front wraps almost entirely around my wrist and there is tons of bagginess at the elbow. I cut out a G back and an H front and a G sleeve, I was afraid if I went smaller it wouldn't fit correctly into the armhole. Should I cut a smaller ...

Sleeves for TV446

Hello, I was wondering what the best way was to narrow the sleeves so that they are more closely fitted to the arm. I am planning on wearing the bodice under a coat and so would like something that fit the arm more snugly than the sleeve currently does. I would use one of the sleeve patterns for a l...

Re: Ensemble with two bodices

Okay, two gowns it is then. I kind of thought that would end in being the case. I guess I'll forgo the silk velvet in favor of a standard triple velvet since it's about 1.5x less expensive and to be honest I can't really tell the difference anyway. I'll go with a red or brown fur since that is my pr...

Ensemble with two bodices

I have fallen completely in love with these three gowns (the red velvet ballgown, the blue fur trimmed gown and the green fur trimmed ensemble) and want to make them all. http://trulyvictorian.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=13890 http://trulyvictorian.com/gallery2/main...

Re: New Group: Ohio Historical Costumers

I'm moving to Michigan in a month so I will be happy to come out to some events. Though I admit I am much more interested in the 1860s-80s.

A 1880s Worth Ballgown

I had to post this wonderful Worth Ball gown I found. Not only is the gown stunning but the auction house has posted pictures of the bodice interior and close-ups of the beading. I know I always love it when we get to see those sort of details. http://whitakerauction.smugmug.com/Fall-2014/DAY-1-Clot...

Re: Embroidery/Beading on Gown opinion needed! Updated!

I have gotten my possible beading pattern for this gown http://trulyvictorian.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=13807 down to two. This one, which is from an 1880 Worth ballgown http://trulyvictorian.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=13812 or t...

Embroidery/Beading on Gown opinion needed! Updated!

I am in the process of making this ball gown, the one on the left, from Fashions of the Gilded Age http://www.pinterest.com/pin/457678380854823991/ . I have been searching for over a week but I am absolutely unable to find a beading pattern for the bertha, front drape and skirt panels. I have expand...

Odd Ball Question

Hi Heather, I have a quick question. Several years ago I made a corset with waist size F using the old hand drawn pattern. At some point I lost that pattern so when the time came to make a new corset I bought a new pattern and made my new corset with a waist size F again. Some how the new corset cam...

Re: Taffeta Petticoat

Thanks Heather,
I guess I'll stick to a muslin petticoat then. I did see taffeta referenced for a gown on page 43 of Victorian and Edwardian fashions from La Mode Illustree so I figured that I could use it for the actual ballgown but I guess I'll pass on the petti.

Taffeta Petticoat

Has anybody ever documented a taffeta petticoat in the 1870s? I know they were worn in the 1890s and later but haven't been able to find one from earlier. I want to make one to wear under a natural form bustle dress but I'm being so correct with the ball gown that I would like to try to be correct w...
