Finished my Metropolitan Museum piece

I wanted to share my take on my Metropolitan Museum piece. Here's my completed outfit and the original extant image. I didn't have enough of the satin fabric (the plain color of the bodice is taken from the center of the embroidered fabric) to fill the center pleat area. The pic was taken without th...

Heather: which pattern for this 1890s shirtwaist?

Hi Heather! Which pattern would you use as a base for the "blouse" area? I plan to manipulate the corselet, make a mockup for the "vest" piece, and have an existing pattern for sleeves. I plan to do the center view without the shirred sleeves (too many people gave those a thumbs ...

Re: underpinnings for 1878

I use the TV121 under mine. It's full enough in the back with the tiers of netting involved. Cindi, you use 2? wow!

MEXICAN DRESS 1840's

Does anyone know of a website showing women's Mexican dress in the 1840s for early California? I found servant wear but nothing for the lady of the house. Thanks! I did find this description from 2 years before the Mast: The fondness for dress among the women is excessive, and is often the ruin of m...

Yes, I shortened it by about 4" and am using the string casings we discussed over the phone instead of pleats, stopping the casing about 15" from the bottom hem.

Re: Dress 6, week of August 21, 2004

I have not cut the center front into a point (yet) but I did cut the 2 side backs into a point at the edge closest to the back piece. It keeps flopping over so I'm thinking that it is too wide at the hemline. I'm going to try it on again tomorrow after some of the shortening revisions I made (sure w...

Re: Dress 6, week of August 21, 2004

I've been working on this overskirt using the long draped overskirt. I cut the side back into more of an angle shape but I can't seem to get that cute square cut look on the side back. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. It looks more like the historic pattern picture right now.

Re: Dress 6, week of August 21, 2004

Let's do a poll.

I dislike high collars. Would this dress look better with TV428, the 1880 jacket bodice or....the 1881 dinner bodice? Both with hemline and/or back revisions of course.

Or maybe just cut it in a small V neckline.. Hmmm.

any pics of 1887 Tournure?

Does anyone have a picture of their new Tournure under their gown?

I would love to see it.

Re: Met Museum Piece

Now repeat after me, Diana. It is OKAY if you don't piece together a creation off a museum piece EXACTLY! I'm too picky and want it to be exact but unfortunately I don't have enough fabric. The problem is....I couldn't find satin to match the embroidered satin panel fabric so for the bodice, I will ...

Re: Met Museum Piece

I was afraid of that. I'd rather have it attached to the skirt. Oh well, my dress will be "inspired" by this museum piece and not an actual reproduction. Thanks for the quick reply! BTW, do I just tack the velvet panels over the top of the skirt or sew it into the side seams? I DO want to ...

Met Museum Piece

Heather: I'm starting to create this museum piece but I can't figure out what is going on with the embroidered panel at the back waist. Is this attached (or should be attached) to the bodice itself? Or perhaps there is a pouf at the top where it attaches to the skirt....hmmm... Any suggestions? I'm ...

Re: Making reproduction of this dress

I made a polonaise like this a few years back. I used the teagown pattern, cut it accordingly; pleated the side seams a bit; then sewed that curtain gathering tape (2 strings inside the tape) to the side back seams and gathered them up to achieve that pulled up from side front to back look.

FYI: The lace ups have a zipper that doesn't show in the picture. I almost ordered it before I read the description because I love the french heel!

I always line my bodices with muslin or even symphony broadcloth when I need it to "sorta" match the fashion fabric.

RECREATING THIS MUSEUM PIECE

Heather: I want to create this museum piece with an altered back. I would rather the brocade go all the way up the back, being all one piece. Can I use the tail bodice for that? If you have any other pattern suggestions for the skirts, please let me know. Thanks! http://www.metmuseum.org/collections...

Oh! I never thought of that!

Do you prefer the bar tacks or do you just use thread bars?
